PLAINFILD NJ. A city man has been arrested and is facing murder charges after allegedly beating a bouncer of a local bar to death early Sunday morning, according to the Union County Prosecutor's Office.
Fernando Meija, 21, of West Fourth Street is charged in connection with the death of Orlando Castro, 36, of East Second Street, authorities said.
Police responded to the Anchor Bar on the 1200 block of West Front Street at about 1 a.m. Sunday to find Castro suffering from blunt-force trauma to the head and face, according to the prosecutor's office. Castro was taken to Somerset Medical Center in Somerville where he was pronounced dead a short time later, authorities said.
But a joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Plainfield Police Division quickly identified Meija as a suspect, and he was arrested a little after 4 p.m. Sunday, according to the prosecutor's office.
"Eyewitnesses stated that a fight broke out, and Mejia punched the victim numerous times in the head, then kicked the victim at least twice in the head," Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said.
Meija was lodged in Union County Jail on $500,000 bail Sunday evening, as the investigation into the Castro's death remains active.
