LORAIN OH - A fire broke out in the basement of Mercy Regional Medical Center yesterday, but it was put out by security officers before firefighters arrived on scene, according to fire department Capt. Dennis Livchak.
Firefighters received an alarm at 3:11 p.m. for the hospital, 3700 Kolbe Road. The majority of the fire was out when they got there, so they preceded to a first-floor office where they opened a wall and cooled off a hot spot.
Livchak said an outside contractor was performing an operations test on an emergency diesel-powered generator when an exhaust pipe got too hot and ignited an area between the walls. A security officer sprayed the fire with an extinguisher.
"He climbed on a step ladder and was able to get an extinguisher into the area where the fire was," Livchak said.
After cutting into the wall and putting out a hot spot, firefighters vented the basement. No patient rooms were affected, and no injuries were reported.
